Stay at Home Mom

Here is some work on another piece I have been working on..."Stay at Home Mom."

Here are some updates to "Father of the Year" I still need to work out some compositional issues and add some elements (various symbols that a father would possess). Let me know how I can salvage this piece!

What makes a good mother? What makes a bad mother? Comments? I'm interested...

Father Son

Is the tie stronger between a mother and son or a father and son...does the same apply to the female gender? What determines the differences (other than gender) we have with our parents and the ties/connections we have with them?

Isn't it funny how we link motherhood to maternity? The concept of parenting is strongly connected to physical needs...how does parenting relate to emotional needs?

workin' through...

I have started a composition and am working on adding elements (other than the clipping of the family) that compliment the time-frame I am working toward. The color is a bit to "dull" as well I'm working on filters and whatnot to spice it up a bit and make it more enjoyable to the eye. I am working on adding symbols that are virtues a father would possess and would be considered "good" and whole for the time.

so far.

I have been working on a piece that fits into the earlier end of my series (50's & 60's). The idea that fathers possessed basic principles and virtues were the "norm." The fact that not all of them did is another story in and of itself...I will be focusing on the public or social demonstrations of the ideal "father." Shows like Leave it to Beaver and My Three Sons come to mind. I used to watch these re-runs on TV and enjoyed them because they were light and happy.

Display Display

I think that a few of my pieces would benefit from their display (obviously). Here is an Idea I had and really think would work well with the end product of my work.

This might emphasize the less subtle difference in the elements in my imagery if displayed in this manner...

Things & Stuff

Right now I am working on some commissions for Kingsfoil (a band based in the greater PA area). They have asked me to create a design fit for a hoodie...here is some of the progress...

suggestions are welcome...

I was browsing for images in the infinite pool called the internet and found a few images that would suite some of the more cheerful versions of parents in advertisements. This one is from 1956 for a father son banquet (take a look at how happy they are spending time together).

Looking...

I've been looking for some styles to incoporate in my work and setting a mood. I would like to set the mood that was popularized in a few consecutive decades for parents and create that mood with my work. One very good example of mood I found in film (one of my favorite film makers) is the Wes Anderson piece The Darjeeling Limited. Take a look into the movie and see how parents take control of the moods of their children and tell me the impact is not tremendous.

Baby Steps

Here and there I find some traces of inspiration...most of it coming from old ads found in magazines and clippings found at old book sales or antique shops. The idea I have is there...but finding the "right" resources is proving a bit more difficult than I originally thought. I have a couple of ideas started but the drive, or turning point in the piece has not come about yet. I'm looking forward to that little shove in the right direction (finding the right image for the piece...or pieces).

an update

Candice Breitz

I was in the Smithsonian's modern art gallery this summer (in DC), and saw a piece of video art that "inspired" me...in other words it made me think. The artist's name is Candice Breitz and her video art is called “Mother” and “Father” (2005). This piece explores the social and cultural roles of mothers and fathers over the past few decades. This idea, or problem in some cases, will be the general basis of the work I would like to complete this semester.
